Are all the Gall Stones are same ?
There are different types of gallstones, this is classified depending
on the component of the bile has which has been solidified.
Almost 90 per cent of gallstones are composed of cholesterol and the
remainder consist of pigment material (bilirubin). The reason for the
formation of pigment stones is not yet known fully, but some people
with blood disorders such as homolysis (eg. sickle cell anemia) are at
higher risk of developing the pigment stones since the excessive
destruction of red blood cell produces bilirubin, a bile pigment.
Gallstones Categories
Gallstones fall into one of three categories
Cholesterol Gallstones: These
gallstones are yellow in color and they are mainly composed of
undissolved cholesterol, although they can also have other components,
such as calcium and bilirubin, the residue from the breakdown of red
blood cells. About 80 percent of gallstones are cholesterol stones.
Pigment gallstones: These are
small, dark brown or black stones which are formed when our bile
contains too much bilirubin.
Primary bile duct stones: Unlike
stones that form in your gallbladder but escape into your bile ducts,
these stones form in the ducts themselves. Primary bile duct stones
are rare.
